Cucumbers are in the same plant family as squash, pumpkin, and watermelon.  Like watermelon, cucumbers are made up of mostly (95 percent) water, which means they can help you stay hydrated.

Cucumbers contain an anti-inflammatory flavonol called fisetin that appears to play an important role in brain health. 2. Reduce Your Risk of Cancer

Organic Cucumbers Are Worth It

If you’re wondering whether you should choose organic cucumbers over conventionally grown varieties, I’d suggest organic. Cucumbers were ranked the 12th most contaminated food and the second in cancer risk due to their pesticide content, according to the Environmental Working Group (EWG).

Further, cucumbers are often waxed after harvest to withstand the long journey to market unscarred and to protect against the many hands that touch it. While the wax is supposed to be food-grade and safe, there are different types used:

  • Carnauba wax (from the carnauba palm tree)
  • Beeswax
  • Shellac (from the lac beetle)
  • Petroleum-based waxes

The natural waxes are far preferable to the petroleum-based waxes, which may contain solvent residues or wood rosins. Produce coated with wax is not labeled as such, but organic produce will not contain petroleum-based wax coatings (although it may contain carnauba wax or insect shellac).

The other potential issue is that wax seals in pesticide residues and debris, making them even more difficult to remove with just water. To reach the contaminants buried beneath the surface of your vegetables and fruits, you need a cleanser that also removes the wax, which is what a fruit and vegetable wash does. You could also peel the cucumber, but that is one of the most nutrient-dense parts of the cucumber (the other is the seeds), so it’s better to consume it if you can.

What Else Are Cucumbers Good For?

Flavonoids and tannins in cucumbers have been found to have both free-radical scavenging and pain-relieving effects, while it has a number of traditional folk uses as well. As written in the Journal of Young PharmacistsTraditionally, this plant is used for headaches; the seeds are cooling and diuretic, the fruit juice of this plant is used as a nutritive and as a demulcent in anti-acne lotions.”

As the fourth-most widely cultivated “vegetable” in the world (cucumbers are technically a fruit), cucumbers are widely available, but seek to get them from a local farmer’s market if you can. Even better, cucumbers are very easy to grow, even if you only have access to a patio. They thrive in containers (provide they have somewhere to climb on) and produce ample produce from a small number of plants, so you could try your hand at growing them yourself.

  • Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV)

There are many uses for Apple Cider Vinegar* (ACV) that are proven and have been used for ages.  Apple cider vinegar is a type of vinegar made by the fermentation of apple cider. During the fermentation process, sugar in the apple cider is broken down by bacteria and yeast into alcohol and then into vinegar. Like other types of vinegar, apple cider vinegar contains acetic acid and it also contains some lactic, citric and malic acids.

Here are just a few health uses …

1. Optimized Nutrient Absorption and Improved Digestion

ACV is high in acetic acid.  Acetic acid increases your body’s ability to absorb essential nutrients from the food you eat. Drinking water with ACV before meals can help you to get more nutrition from the foods you eat.  A few tablespoons may help to improve digestion.  Apple cider vinegar can also be very helpful in reducing gas and bloating. Just take a tablespoon of ACV diluted in water or tea before a meal. It can also help ameliorate symptoms of heartburn. Take a dose as soon as you feel heartburn symptoms coming on.  ACV also improves bowel movement on an as needed basis … apple cider vinegar’s acidity aids in detoxifying and cleansing the digestive tract and cleaning out the colon.  ACV can help the body remove toxic waste more efficiently before it has time to do damage and it also helps to detoxify the liver. Add 2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar to a 1 or 2 liter filtered water bottle. Drink this throughout the day to cleanse your body, liver and kidneys.

2. Eliminate Fungus/Yeast

If you are dealing with a candida yeast overgrowth or foot/skin fungus, ACV may provide you with a solution. Add 1 teaspoon ACV to a glass of water and drink before each meal. At first your candida may seem to worsen, caused by the detoxification, but it will improve after it is under control.

To get rid of skin or toe fungus, soak feet in ACV or apply on the affected area. It will give a burning sensation, so if you have a sensitive skin, it is best to dilute with water.

3. Rinse For Healthy And Shiny Hair/Hair Loss

ACV can be used as a rinse for your hair after shampooing to add healthy body and shine. Use ½ tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and a cup of cold water. Pour through your hair after shampooing several times a week.  It may also help reduce hair loss.

4. Whiten Your Teeth

ACV can help remove stains from your teeth.  Rub your teeth with ACV and rinse thoroughly afterwards.  Don’t repeat this treatment more than once or twice a week, due to possible enamel erosion.

5. Green Cleaning

Mix ½ cup ACV with ½ cup water to clean microwaves, bathroom and kitchen surfaces, sinks/tubs, windows, and mirrors. Add the mixture in a spray bottle and it couldn’t be simpler. For the tougher stains, use undiluted ACV. For toilet cleaning, pour undiluted ACV in your toilet and let sit overnight. Try ACV as a dishwashing detergent instead of your normal dish detergent; just mix ½ cup ACV with 1 cup of water.

By utilizing orange or lemon peels with ACV (in jar and shaken for 10 days), the peels will release oils to give it fresh scent and antimicrobial properties.

Baking soda and apple cider vinegar is an amazing combination that has many uses.  As a drain cleaner, sprinkle 1/4 cup baking soda down the drain, then add 1/2 or 1 cup apple cider vinegar and let it bubble for 15 minutes, then rinse with hot water. This is a much safer alternative to dangerous and toxic drain cleaners.

6. All-natural Flea Repellent For Your Pets

Mix one part vinegar with one part water and add to a spraying bottle. Moisten well the coat of your pet with this mixture once a day, for a few days to a week, and all fleas should be eliminated.

7.  Supplementation for Animals

Some holistic health practitioners recommend that ACV be placed in a dog’s drinking water but it may be better placed in fresh food if you prefer to keep additives out of the drinking water.  Use 1 teaspoon for small dogs and 1 tablespoon. for medium-large dogs.

8.  Fresh Produce Cleanse

According to Dr. Mercola, Apple Cider Vinegar is one of the best natural agents for removing certain pesticides and bacteria from your fresh produce. Use a solution of 10% vinegar to 90% water as a bath to briefly soak produce. Just place your vegetables or fruit in the solution, swish it around, and rinse thoroughly.

Don’t use this process on fragile fruits (like berries), since they could be damaged in the process or soak up too much vinegar through their porous skins.

9.  Skin Care

While one of the benefits of detoxification is clear skin, anyone who has done any kind of intensive detox knows that the road to clear skin is often loaded with blemishes. As your body releases toxins from your blood and tissue, some toxins make their exits through the skin in the form of pimples, rashes and other angry red eruptions.

You can use apple cider vinegar as an astringent, by soaking a washcloth/cotton pad in diluted ACV and applying it to your face. Or, you can simply dab it right onto blemishes to dry them out and heal them.

It’s amazing how smooth your skin feels after applying ACV; it tightens and plumps it a bit, and can help reduce or minimize the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.

10.  Deodorant

Most commercial deodorants are antiperspirants, which block your ability to sweat. Since sweat is one of your body’s natural means of detoxification, blocking your ability to sweat can block your ability to detoxify. Plus, most commercial deodorants and antiperspirants contain aluminum and a load of toxic, dangerous chemicals and synthetic fragrances, so you want to avoid them anyway.

You can actually use apple cider vinegar as a natural deodorant! Apple cider vinegar absorbs and neutralizes stinky scents. Simply rub a bit of ACV in your underarms and it will absorb and minimize body odors. The vinegary smell dissipates once it dries.

*Apple cider vinegar may interact with diuretics, laxatives, and medicines for diabetes and heart disease, so if you’re planning to use it on a daily basis, be sure to consult your doctor to avoid interactions with the medicines you’re taking.

There are some suggested uses of ACV for diabetes, cancer and other types of diseases; however, I do not feel that there have been enough scientific studies to warrant talking about those uses yet.  Stay tuned though as more research is accomplished on Apple Cider Vinegar!

1.      Soothe Headaches

Lavender’s soothing and relaxing aroma works wonders to relieve headaches caused by tension. Apply 3-5 drops of lavender essential oil to a warm (or cold), damp cloth. Place it on your forehead while lying down for 10 to 20 minutes. Or when on the go, apply one drop on each temple in a circular motion to find instant relieve. Add it to your favorite massage oil and rub on your forehead, shoulders, neck, and back.

2.      Sleep Aid

Fall asleep faster and get a deep and calming night’s rest.  Use a room diffuser to create a calming, sleep promoting scent in the room, add it to your night cream, add 1-2 drops to your tea, put a few drops on your pillow, massage your temples, or take a (foot) bath before turning in. For your little ones, you could massage their little feet with a base oil with a few drops of essential oil or you could add a few drops to their favorite stuffed animal or pillow.

3.      Pain Relief

Lavender oil can be used to relieve pain and heal burns without scarring. First, cool the area with cold, running water for at least 5 minutes. Then add 2-3 drops on the affected area to decrease the pain and aid the healing process. For skin sensitivity, dilute the lavender oil in pure water or in pure Aloe vera gel.

4.      Itching

Apply topically, directly onto to affected area or dilute in a carrier oil if you have a sensitive skin. You could use a carrier oil or Aloe vera gel to dilute the lavender essential oil.

5.      Anxiety, Depression, and De-stressing

Lavender is well-known for calming nerves and emotions. It works as a natural sedative. Diffuse the oil in the air, add a few drops to a vaporizer, massage your temples, put a few drops on your pillow, add several drops of lavender oil to a bath for a soothing soak, or use as a perfume.

6.       Acne Treatment

Add 1-2 drops to your favorite facial toner or cream to eliminate acne and for prevention. Lavender inhibits bacteria growth and aids your body to balance its sebum secretion.

7.      Disinfectant for Wounds

Lavender has antibacterial and pain-relieving properties. It helps the healing process and stops bleeding. Just drop lavender oil on your cut\wound or dilute in pure water if you have sensitive skin.

8.      Dry, Chapped Skin Or Lips

Lavender oil works wonders for dry and chapped skin. Use topically on the affected area or add a few drops to your favorite body lotion or lip balm. Mix several drops of lavender oil with coconut oil and use topically on eczema and dermatitis.

Place a drop of lavender essential oil on the end of your tongue, behind your ears, or just inhale it from a handkerchief to find relief. For pregnant women it is recommended to wait until the second trimester before using it.

10.  Flavor Enhancement

Pure lavender oil is edible! First be sure that the oil is very, very diluted, and make sure you’re using food-grade essential oil, as most are not edible. Not all chemicals are bad.  A chemical is merely a substance with a distinct molecular composition. Your tea is a chemical and so is the water that went into your tea. 1. Bisphenol-A (BPA)

Bisphenol-A (BPA) is a chemical found in plastics, often in food containers like those reusable food storage bowls and lids. It is also found in the linings of canned foods. And it can leech into the food, where it disrupts hormones and causes fertility issues, faster development in girls, and behavioral issues. Opt for glass as an alternative.

2. Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)

VOCs are volatile organic compounds which are gasses emitted from certain solids and liquids like paints, pesticides, and scented products such as laundry detergent. They have been linked to asthma and cancer. Switch to an unscented detergent (preferably organic/safe-proven) and only use non-VOC paints and lacquers when improving your home environment.

3. Perfluorinated Compounds (PFCs)

Perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) can be found in nonstick cookware and some fabrics. They are linked to cancer and birth defects. Eliminate nonstick pots and pans and use stainless steel or cast iron instead.

4. Triclosan

Scary Statin Drugs and Owning Your Own Health!

I’ve been reading quite a bit on different drugs and added chemicals to the products we buy.  I’m very disappointed and downright sad about what I’ve been learning.  I recently read information about a Dr. Graveline and what happened to him with Statin drugs and what he has found out since.  It is pretty amazing and scary, all at the same time. I want to be sure that as many people as possible learn about this major issue in health!  This is what I do and I will continue to do my mission and purpose in life!  Total wellness / total health is the most important important aspect of life, in my opinion, in order for folks to enjoy their life to the fullest, especially as we age.  I personally watched my Mom and my Dad suffer horribly in their last years as I took care of them.  It was so sad to see them forget everything they ever knew, including people and family that they loved so dearly. It was devastating to see them lose all interest in life.  I don’t want to live my last years that way and I don’t want anyone else to have to live that way either.  Make your total health part of your total physical, total emotional and total spiritual health!

Dr. Graveline is a medical doctor with 23 years of experience whose health was seriously damaged by a statin drug. His personal questions brought him out of retirement to investigate statins, which he’s been doing for the past 10 years.

As a former astronaut, he would get annual physicals at the Johnson Space Center in Houston. In 1999 his cholesterol hit 280 and he was given a prescription for Lipitor.

“When they suggested Lipitor (10 mg), I went along with it because I had no reason to be particularly worried about statin drugs,” he says. “I had used it a year or so before my retirement, but I wasn’t a big user.”

However, it quickly became apparent that something was seriously wrong.

“It was six weeks later when I experienced my first episode of what was later diagnosed as transient global amnesia,” Dr. Graveline says.

“This is an unusual form of amnesia wherein you immediately, without the slightest warning, are unable to formulate new memory and you can no longer communicate. Not because you cannot talk, but you can’t remember the last syllable that was spoken to you. So nothing you say is relevant anymore. In addition, you have a retrograde loss of memory, sometimes decades into the past.”

He “woke up” about six hours later in the office of a neurologist, who gave him the diagnosis: transient global amnesia. He quit taking the Lipitor despite the reassurances from his doctors that the drug was not of concern, and that it was just a coincidence.

He had no relapses during the remainder of the year, but his cholesterol was still around 280 at his next physical. He was again urged to take Lipitor, and he relented.

“I admit I was concerned, but I had talked to maybe 30 doctors and a few pharmacologists during the interval,” Dr. Graveline says. “They all said “statins don’t do that.” So I allowed myself to go back on statins but this time I took just 5 mg.

…[E]ight weeks later, I had my second, and my worst episode. In this one, I was a 13-year-old high school student for 12 hours… This is what convinced me, when I finally woke up, that something was wrong with the statin drugs. And yet, the doctors were, for years after that, still saying that this was just a remarkable coincidence.

This took me out of retirement and I’ve been actively involved in researching statin drugs ever since.”

Dr. Graveline has published a book about his discoveries called Lipitor: Thief of Memory.

“In trying to reach an explanation, I called Joe Graedon and asked him if he had ever heard of any unusual reactions associated with statins,” Dr. Graveline says of his initial investigations.

He was directed to the statin effects study by Beatrice Golomb in San Diego, California, and his story was also published in a syndicated newspaper column. Within weeks, the web site he had created received reports of 22 cases of transient global amnesia, along with hundreds of cases of cognitive damage. At present, over 2,000 cases of transient global amnesia associated with the use of statins have been reported to FDA’s MedWatch.

But cognitive problems are not the only harmful aspect of these drugs. Other serious adverse reactions include:

  • Personality changes / mood disorders
  • Muscle problems, polyneuropathy (nerve damage in the hands and feet), and rhabdomyolysis (a serious degenerative muscle tissue condition)
  • Sexual dysfunction
  • Immune suppression
  • Pancreas or liver dysfunction, including a potential increase in liver enzymes
  • Cataracts

According to Dr. Graveline, a form of Lou Gehrig’s disease or ALS may also be a side effect, although the US FDA is resistant to accept the link found by their Swedish counterpart, and has so far refused to issue a warning.

“The World Health Organization (WHO) reported on this in July 2007 when Ralph Edwards, who directs the Vigibase in Sweden (the equivalent of the US MedWatch), reported ALS-like conditions in statin users worldwide,” Dr. Graveline says.

He has since forwarded hundreds of cases to MedWatch, but the FDA still has not been moved to act, and doctors are therefore unaware of the connection between this deadly disease and statin use.

“[W]e have anecdotal evidence that if you stop the statin drug early enough, some of these cases regress. That’s why we thought it was important that FDA issue a warning, but they haven’t,” Dr. Graveline says.

Today, all of these adverse effects, including the cognitive problems Dr. Graveline warned about 10 years ago, are supported by published research. MedWatch has received about 80,000 reports of adverse events related to statin drugs, and only an estimated one to 10 percent of side effects are ever reported, so the true scope of statins’ adverse effects are still greatly underestimated.

Statins Damage Your Brain

As is often the case with pharmaceutical drugs, the side effects end up teaching us new things about how the human body works. When statins first hit the market, conventional medicine was unaware of the importance of cholesterol for proper brain function. Now, researchers believe that statins’ adverse effects on cognition are due to cholesterol insufficiency.

Research also began to emerge in 2001 showing the importance of cholesterol in the formation of memories.

“Then we have… dolichols,” Dr. Graveline says. “[W]hen a statin is used, it blocks the mevalonate pathway to get at cholesterol inhibition. It works very beautifully. But in so doing, it blocks CoQ10, dolichols, as well as other major biochemicals…

[D]olichol is one that most doctors have never even heard of before, but it just so happens that dolichols are almost as important as CoQ10 and cholesterol in cell processing.”

In fact, dolichols are vital to a number of cellular processes, including:

  • Glycoprotein synthesis
  • Cell identification
  • Cell communication
  • Immunodefense
  • Neurohormone formation

Dr. Graveline goes on to explain that dolichols influence all the hormones involved with your mental condition, including your emotions and moods. And if you do not have sufficient dolichol, your entire process of neurohormone production will be altered—with potentially devastating results.

“[T]here are thousands of reports of aggressiveness and hostility, increased sensitivity, paranoia, depression and homicidal ideation,” Dr. Graveline says.

There are also numerous reports of suicide.

“This whole range of what I call personality- or emotion and behavioral responses have to do with the dolichol deficiency brought on by the mevalonate blockade,” Dr. Graveline explains.

“It’s not just something that occurs in an occasional person… You know we’re all the same and yet we’re all different… You give one medicine to 10 people and if you’re really lucky, in six of them it will do what it’s supposed to do. That’s the way it is with this. I expect there are some people that won’t get any effects of dolichol suppression because they have alternative pathways. The same thing probably holds for CoQ10.”

That said, it’s important to realize that your brain also requires cholesterol in order for memory formation to function normally. In essence, statins suppress a number of vital elements for proper brain functioning, including cholesterol, antioxidants and co-factors like CoQ10, and dolichol.

At the same time, statins also create mitochondrial DNA and cellular damage, including in your brain.

***(Glutathione is the very best supplement to help your body at the cellular level.  Glutathione is manufactured by the body itself but it declines as we age, starting its decline at the age of 20.  Glutathione is essential for health and life!  But taking glutathione as a supplement won’t do a thing for you … fortunately, a way has been found to allow the precursors for glutathione to enter every cell of the body and then the body is able to process its own glutathione that way.  The glutathione molecule itself is too large to enter our cells but it is manufactured within the cells.  I have personally had my precursor glutathione accelerator product tested for my body and it was found that this product supplement is doing the most good within my body for my health!!!  CoQ10 is included in this amazing formula!  You really can’t do better than this for your total wellness / total health!)***

Your brain uses glial cells as factories for producing its own cholesterol on demand. Unfortunately, glial cells are affected by statins in the same way as your liver cells, or any other cell in our body. So if you take a statin, you’re also harming your glial cells and when they cease to function normally, that on-demand cholesterol capability also ceases and your brain can no longer function properly.

The Importance of CoQ10 or, if You’re Over 40, Ubiquinol

It’s now clear that if you take statin drugs without taking CoQ10, your health is at serious risk as statin drugs deplete your body of this essential co-enzyme. As your body gets more and more depleted of CoQ10, you may suffer from fatigue, muscle weakness and soreness, and eventually heart failure. Coenzyme Q10 is also very important in the process of neutralizing free radicals.

So when your CoQ10 is depleted, you enter a vicious cycle of increased free radicals, loss of cellular energy, and damaged mitochondrial DNA.

Unfortunately, the majority of people who take statins are unaware of their need for CoQ10, and physicians rarely advise their patients to take this supplement along with their statin—at least in the United States. It’s also important to supplement right from the start. According to Dr. Graveline, once the mitochondrial damage and mutations are formed they cannot be reversed—no matter how much CoQ10 you take.

So early intervention is key. (Dr. Graveline goes into further detail of how CoQ10 offers protection against mitochondrial DNA damage in this interview, so for more information, please listen to it in its entirety.) If you decide to take a CoQ10 supplement and are over the age of 40, it’s important to choose the reduced version, called ubiquinol.

Ubiquinol is a FAR more effective form—I personally take 1-3 a day as it has far-ranging health benefits. Dr. Graveline concurs with this recommendation.

As for dosage, Dr. Graveline makes the following recommendation:

  • If you have symptoms of statin damage such as muscle pain, take anywhere from 200 to 500 mg
  • If you just want to use it preventively, 200 mg or less should be sufficient

There’s also evidence that CoQ10/ubiquinol is beneficial for Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease, and even cancer, and that large doses may be justified in those cases as well.

In addition, CoQ10 is believed to play an important role in preventing premature aging in general by preventing telomere shortening, which can slow or potentially even reverse the aging process. This is just one of the additional benefits of CoQ10, and one of the reasons why I take ubiquinol daily even though I’ve never been on a statin drug.

There are no reported side effects of CoQ10 supplementation, and neither I nor Dr. Graveline have ever heard of anyone overdosing on it. The only drawback is cost.

However, if you’re taking ubiquinol, here’s some cost-saving information for you.

Certified reduced ubiquinol is only manufactured by one company in the entire world, a Japanese company called Kaneca. They own the patent. So, as long as it’s certified ubiquinol, you can buy the cheapest brand you can find, because they’re all the same.

Other Valuable Antioxidants for Optimal Health—Especially if You’re Taking a Statin

CoQ10, or preferably the reduced version, ubiquinol, is at the top of the list of important supplements when you’re taking a statin drug. But there are also other antioxidants and nutrients that can be helpful. For example, selenium is also seriously inhibited by statin drugs, and selenium, along with magnesium, are commonly involved as co-factors in a variety of biological functions.  *** A glutathione accelerator is another important supplement that should be at the top of the list.***

Other important nutrients include:

  • VitaminC
  • Vitamin D
  • Vitamin E—An emerging form of vitamin E called tocotrienol is 50 times more powerful than tocopherol, which has been used for the past 60 years. It also helps produce cholesterol and has other biochemical advantages
  • Alpha-lipoic acid
  • L-carnitine—which helps metabolize fats properly. Since about 70 percent of your muscles’ energy comes from fats, it’s important to have the ability to metabolize them.According to Dr. Graveline: “If you take L-carnitine and find that you suddenly feel much better, then you’ve just proven you need it for the rest of your life because you’re one of those people who have a dysfunction in this capability; you don’t have the means to properly burn fats at our muscle level… naturally you would then get weak when exercising. So it’s useful for making a diagnosis. If nothing happens after three months of a good dose, then I would say you can forget about L-carnitine.”

The Sad Truth: Even Your Doctor has Been Mislead About Cholesterol

That said, aside from taking CoQ10 if you’re on a statin, your diet really should be your primary source of nutrients. (For vitamin D, you’d ideally get it from sun exposure.) Supplements are just that; supplemental to an otherwise healthy diet.

“I think that when you have a statin associated muscle or nerve or even brain dysfunction, this is where you’ve got to go because that’s where the trouble is,” Dr. Graveline agrees.

“[I]f it’s cholesterol inhibition, you just eat more eggs… I can’t believe I went 17 years and never ate an egg. I can’t believe how gullible I was. I was this young medical doctor; I marched to that band of the cholesterol-causation people… I did everything I was supposed to do, and it was all wrong. I can’t believe that I was led astray, maybe for 25 years of my practice! It’s so bad to have to look back and realize you’ve been treating cardiovascular disease erroneously because you were doing what you were asked to do.The sad truth is that cholesterol, our supposed enemy for 35 years, has nothing to do with cardiovascular disease. it is the most important biochemical in your body.

… We all listened to what amounts to brainwashing. The brainwashing that we got from 1955 on, to just recently… They have liberalized the diet stuff recently though, so people are back to eating eggs and drinking whole milk and eating butter. I went around recommending margarine for so long, and margarine is what’s causing disease—butter is what’s helping to cure it. It’s incredible!”

This is true for the majority of our conventional medical professionals. They simply do not know better… which is all the more reason to arm yourself with the information you need to take control of your own health. Shunning statin drugs and addressing your lifestyle is the way to go if you have high cholesterol.

How Can Someone Who Lives in Insane Luxury Be a Star in Today’s World?

As I begin to write this, I ‘slug’ it, as we writers say, which means I put a heading on top of the document to identify it. This heading is ‘eonline FINAL,’ and it gives me a shiver to write it.  I have been doing this column for so long that I cannot even  recall when I started. I loved writing this column so much for so long I came to believe it would never end.

It worked well for a long time, but gradually, my changing as a person and the world’s change have overtaken it.  On a small scale, Morton’s, while better than ever, no longer attracts as many stars as it used to. It still brings in the rich people in droves and definitely some stars. I saw Samuel L. Jackson there a few days ago, and we had a nice visit, and right before that, I saw and had a splendid talk with Warren Beatty in an elevator, in which we agreed that Splendor in the Grass was a super movie. But Morton’s is not the star galaxy it once was, though it probably will be again.

Beyond that, a bigger change has happened..?  I no longer think Hollywood stars are terribly important. They are uniformly pleasant, friendly people, and they treat me better than I deserve to be treated. But a man or woman who makes a huge wage for memorizing lines and reciting them in front of a camera is no longer my idea of a shining star we should all look up to.

How can a man or woman who makes an eight-figure wage and lives in insane luxury really be a star in today’s world, if by a ‘star’ we mean someone bright and powerful and attractive as a role model?  Real stars are not riding around in the backs of limousines or in Porsches or getting trained in yoga or Pilates and eating only raw fruit while they have Vietnamese girls do their nails.

They can be  interesting, nice people, but they are not heroes to me any longer.  A real star is the soldier of the 4th Infantry Division who poked  his head into a hole on a farm near Tikrit , Iraq .  He could have been met by a bomb or a hail of AK-47 bullets.  Instead, he faced an abject Saddam Hussein and the gratitude of all of the decent people of the world.

A real star is the U.S. soldier who was sent to disarm a bomb next to a road north of Baghdad .  He approached it, and the bomb went off and killed him.

A real star, the kind who haunts my memory night and day, is the U.S. soldier in Baghdad who saw a little girl playing with a piece of unexploded ordnance on a street near where he was guarding a station.  He pushed her aside and threw himself on it just as it exploded.  He left a family desolate in California and a little girl alive in Baghdad ..

The stars who deserve media attention are not the ones who have lavish weddings on TV but the ones who patrol the streets of Mosul even after two of their buddies were murdered and their bodies battered and stripped for the sin of trying to protect Iraqis from terrorists.

We put couples with incomes of $100 million a year on the covers of our magazines.  The  noncoms and officers who barely scrape by on military pay but stand on guard in Afghanistan and Iraq and on ships and in submarines and near the Arctic Circle are anonymous as they live and die.

I am no longer comfortable being a part of the system that has such poor values, and I  do not want to perpetuate those values by pretending that who is eating at Morton’s is a big subject.

There are plenty of other stars in the American firmament…the policemen and women who go off on patrol in South Central and have no idea if they will return alive; the orderlies and paramedics who bring in people who have been in terrible accidents and prepare them for surgery; the teachers and nurses who throw their whole spirits into caring for autistic children; the kind men and women who work in hospices and in cancer wards.

Think of each and every fireman who was running up the stairs at the World Trade Center as the towers began to collapse. Now you have my idea of a real hero.

I came to realize that life lived to help others is the only one that matters. This is my highest and best use as a human.  I can put it another way. Years ago, I realized I could never be as great an actor as Olivier or as good a comic as Steve Martin or  Martin Mull or Fred Willard–or as good an economist as Samuelson or Friedman or as good a writer as Fitzgerald.  Or even remotely close to any of them.

But, I could be a devoted father to my son, husband to my wife and, above all, a good son to the parents who had done so much for me.  This came to be my main task in life.  I did it moderately well with my son, pretty well with my wife and well indeed with my parents (with my sister’s help).  I cared for and paid attention to them in their declining years.  I stayed with my father as he got sick, went into extremis and then into a coma and then entered immortality with my sister and me reading him the Psalms.

This was the only point at which my life touched the lives of the soldiers in Iraq or the firefighters in New York …  I came to realize that life lived to help others is the only one that matters and that it is my duty, in return for the lavish life God has devolved upon me, to help others He has placed in my path. This is my highest and best use as a human.

Faith is not believing that God can.  It is knowing that God will.

THE GREEN LIFE “Pollution in People”

The article below has such good information that I want to share with
you.  As you know, I am passionate about eliminating toxins as much
as possible.  Toxins render our bodies ability to function properly and
the more we can rid these toxins from our lives, the better our bodies
will function and we will feel so much better, less tired, much more
energetic, better skin, better immune system and total wellness.
Why wouldn’t we want this for ourselves?  It is much easier than we
often think to eliminate toxins.  Please read below!!!

For years, I thought I could keep my body free of dangerous
chemicals by taking just a couple of simple precautions — using
natural cleansers and buying organic food. Wrong.Biomonitoring tests to check for chemicals in people always find
them. It doesn’t matter whether the people are old, young, newborn
or even fetal, nor what their history is. Contamination is always
found. It is therefore a virtual certainty that if I were to be tested,

I would learn I was contaminated, too. Not to cause panic, but so
would you.

This pollution of our bodies is thought by many scientists to be
universal today. It goes by the name of body burden.

Where do the chemicals come from? They are used in a seemingly
endless array of industrial applications and consumer products,
including baby toys, air freshener, laundry detergent, shampoo,
nail polish, food containers, rugs and furniture, to name a few.

And how do they get into our bodies? Through our food, tap and
bottled water, indoor and outdoor air and many of the things we
touch or put on our skin. Babies get them in the womb from their
mothers.
Hence, the phenomenon of infants starting life with
chemicals already in their systems.

Given how ubiquitous chemicals are, the question is not really how
they get into us, but whether there is any way to keep them out. I
will get back to that.

Let’s first talk about whether and how the chemicals might harm us.
The chemical industry predictably claims they are safe. In reality,
next to nothing is known about the vast majority of them. That’s
because our laws allow chemicals to go on the market without prior
safety testing
.

But we do know quite a bit about a few chemicals, and what we know
is not reassuring. For instance:

Phthalates have been linked to problems with reproductive system
development in baby boys and to insulin resistance and obesity in
adult men. They are used in a wide variety of cosmetic products,
such as moisturizers, nail polish and baby powder; cleaning products;
plastic food wraps; and toys, especially those made with PVC plastic.
Other uses include medical equipment and building supplies.

Bisphenol A (also known as BPA) has been linked to breast and
prostate cancer, reproductive problems, diabetes and alteration of
brain chemistry and behavioral changes. It is used in many household p
products, including plastic baby bottles, hard plastic sports bottles
and metal food cans, which are often lined with plastic to prevent a
metallic taste in food.

PCBs, which were formerly used as electrical insulators, among
other things, have been found to affect the immune, reproductive,
nervous and endocrine systems. They are also considered a probable
carcinogen. Though their production in the U.S. was banned in 1979,
these long-lasting chemicals continue to circulate in the environment
and in the food chain. New releases also occur when old equipment
made with PCBs is damaged or improperly disposed of.

Dioxins, a byproduct of the manufacture and burning of chlorine
products, can affect the cardiovascular, respiratory, immune,
reproductive, nervous and endocrine systems and cause cancer.
Other classes of chemicals shown to be toxic include PBDEs (used as
flame retardants) and PFCs (used to repel water, stains and grease).

All the chemicals listed above are endocrine disruptors, meaning that
they interfere with the workings of the endocrine — or hormone —
system. Hormones are our bodies’ chemical messengers. They tell
cells to start or stop carrying out key functions at the proper time.
While key to basic body functioning throughout our lives, they are
particularly important to fetal development. During the nine months
in which a baby takes shape, an exquisitely timed orchestra of these
chemical signals ensures that the baby’s body develops as it should.
Any tampering with the type or timing of the signals can have tragic
consequences, from cancers that emerge later in life to missing body
parts. They can also affect the brain and behavior.

The years directly leading up to puberty, when hormones again play
a major role in body development, may be another time when people
are particularly sensitive to endocrine-disrupting chemicals. So, how
can you protect yourself, your children and your children-to-be?

Unfortunately, moving somewhere remote is not, in itself, an answer. Many
chemicals are highly mobile and resistant to breakdown. Over the last few
decades, they have spread on wind and water currents to every corner of the
globe, including the most pristine places.

However, your personal practices can make a difference in your LEVEL of
exposure, not just to endocrine disruptors but to other toxins that humans are
spewing out into the environment. These steps, in particular, can help:

* Buy organic food as much as possible. If cost is an issue, focus on the produce
that will make the most difference, along with milk if you have young children.

*Eat less meat and meat products, especially fatty meats and butter, as many
toxic chemicals are picked up by animals and stored in their fat (and ours).

* When choosing fish, follow safety guidelines for avoiding mercury
contamination.

* Reduce your use of cosmetics and fragrances and buy less toxic brands.

* Use unscented laundry detergent and cleaning products — or use organic
cleansers.

* Do not use chemical pesticides around your house, on your pets or on your lawn.

At the same time as you take these steps in your own life, keep in mind that the
real solutions to body burden, like other forms of pollution, are societal not
individual. Without government regulation, safety from chemicals is a losing battle.

Unsafe at any level. Toxicologists are fond of saying, “the dose makes the poison,”
meaning that toxic substances are only toxic above a certain level. This explains
their method of safety testing, which is to begin at the high end of the dose
spectrum and work their way down until they find a dose that seems safe. But
such thresholds may not exist with endocrine disruptors, which can have effects
at unimaginably small doses, while sometimes having different or no effects at
higher levels.

Environmental health scientists are therefore looking for new testing
methodologies that take these different patterns into account.

The old view was that the “placental barrier” protected the fetus from
contaminants in the mother’s body. Recent research has shown this to be false.
For instance, ten of ten newborns whose umbilical cord blood was tested on
their day of birth as part of the Human Toxome Project were found to be
contaminated with scores of chemicals, including many “linked to brain and
nervous system toxicity, cancer, and birth defects and developmental delays.”

Look for personal care products without the word “fragrance” in the ingredient list
to cut down on your exposure to chemicals. This catchall term can mask the
presence of a slew of toxins. Don’t trust product claims of being unscented, warns
the Environmental Working Group, as fragrances may be used to create the
unscented effect. You actually have to scan the ingredients to confirm that the
word “fragrance” does not appear.
